GPT-6 in ChatGPT is now rolling out to everyone, including free users. OpenAI announced it on 7 October 2026 together with the change you notice first: Intelligent UI, a new way of answering that mixes text with charts, diagrams, buttons, forms and small interactive tools inside the chat itself. Here is what changed, which model you get on each plan, and how to make the most of it with practical examples.
What GPT-6 in ChatGPT is and when each plan gets it
According to the official ChatGPT release notes, the rollout started globally on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in the Chat tab, and expanded to Free and Go from 8 October. For Enterprise, availability depends on workspace admin settings.
"GPT-6" is not a single model but a family with its own names:
| Plan | GPT-6 model in Chat | Intelligent UI |
|---|---|---|
| Free and Go | GPT-6 Luna | Yes |
| Plus | GPT-6 Sol (Instant, Medium, High) | Yes |
| Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol (up to Extra High) | Yes |
| Pro reasoning option | GPT-6 Astra (GPT-6 Pro) | No |
Luna and Sol are tuned for everyday conversation. Astra is the most capable model, aimed at hard, long-running tasks, and is available in Chat on the $100 and $200 Pro plans, Business and Enterprise. The models behind the Work tab and Codex are unchanged by this release, and older models remain selectable: GPT-6 replaces the "Latest" option in the model menu, while anyone who explicitly picked GPT-5.6 Sol stays on GPT-5.6.
One caveat: at the time of writing, one of OpenAI's help pages still lists GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go, while the announcement and the Intelligent UI page say GPT-6 Luna. The rollout is gradual, so check the model menu in your own account.
Intelligent UI: answers with charts, buttons and interactivity
Until now ChatGPT answered mostly in text, with the occasional table or image. With Intelligent UI, OpenAI has trained GPT-6 to compose each answer from text, visuals and interactive parts, choosing the format based on the question. The Intelligent UI help page says responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences. A comparison might appear side by side; an explanation might become a diagram where you change an input and watch the effect. When a plain text answer is the most useful, that is what you get.
No special prompt is needed: the model decides when visuals help. There is no separate usage quota either; your plan's normal limits apply.
Answers that start sooner
The other change is perceived speed. GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking or using tools, then add findings without another prompt. OpenAI says that in its internal tests GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is the company's own figure, and it measures time to the first words, not total completion time.
Practical examples of the new ChatGPT with GPT-6
In a press briefing reported by TechCrunch, OpenAI showed a question about how a plane flies producing several diagrams of wing lift. These are everyday uses where Intelligent UI adds real value:
- Personal finance: "Help me save $3,000 this year" can return a savings calculator where you adjust amounts and timelines.
- Shared costs: ask for a bill splitter for a dinner or a trip and use it right in the chat.
- Learning: physics, economics or biology explained with diagrams that react when you change a variable.
- Comparing products: two phones or two mobile plans shown side by side.
- Plans and routes: OpenAI mentioned a map for a multi-day hike and recipes with visual support.
- Checklists: some components, such as checklists, keep their state when you refresh the conversation, although state does not carry over to other chats.
- Fun: you can ask it to build a small game to play inside the conversation.
Good prompting still matters. Our best AI prompts for productivity work just as well; simply add "show it as a table" or "build me a calculator".
How to turn off or reduce the visuals
Not everyone wants component-heavy answers. On ChatGPT for the web, open Settings, go to Personalization and choose the simple style under "Layout and visuals". OpenAI warns that this reduces visual and interactive elements but does not remove them entirely or restore a text-only mode. You can also use Custom Instructions ("keep answers concise", "use tables when comparing options") or ask for a different style in a single conversation.
GPT-6 and Intelligent UI limitations
- It only works in the Chat tab, not in the Work tab or in Voice.
- It is not available with the Pro reasoning option (GPT-6 Astra).
- The older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it; OpenAI recommends the web. On mobile, update the app.
- Plus does not include the Extra High reasoning level.
- The rollout is gradual, and some users on OpenAI's forums report they do not see the new interface yet.
For everyday users the shift is bigger than it looks: ChatGPT stops being just a text box and starts to behave like an app built on the fly for each answer. If you are choosing an assistant, see our Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is GPT-6 free in ChatGPT?
Yes. Free and Go plans get GPT-6 Luna from 8 October 2026, with Intelligent UI included. Paid plans use GPT-6 Sol and get higher reasoning levels.
What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol, Luna and Astra?
Luna is the GPT-6 model for Free and Go, Sol is the model for paid plans, and Astra is the most capable model, reserved for the Pro option for complex tasks. Astra does not support Intelligent UI.
Can I turn off Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?
Not completely. On the web you can choose a simpler response style in Personalization, which reduces visual elements, although some may still appear.
Does Intelligent UI work on mobile?
Yes, on the web and in updated mobile apps. It does not work in the older macOS and Windows desktop apps or in Voice mode.
