Free Gemini no longer lets you pick a model and mostly uses Flash-Lite since 9 October. What changed, what paid plans include and 5 free alternatives.

If you use Gemini for free with a personal Google account, the assistant you open today is not the one you had last month. Since 9 October 2026, accounts without a Google AI subscription can no longer pick Flash or Pro. Instead, an automatic mode decides for you and sends most prompts to Flash-Lite, the fastest and lightest model in the family. Here is exactly what Google changed, what each paid plan gets, and which free alternatives are worth trying if the new free Gemini falls short.

What changed for free Gemini users on 9 October?

Google set it out in its help article Changes to Gemini model access and limits. Starting in October 2026, model availability changes in the Gemini apps for personal accounts, and the first users affected, from 9 October, are those without an AI plan. In practice:

  • The model picker is gone. Free accounts can no longer manually choose Flash or Pro. The default setting is now Auto.
  • Auto chooses the model. Google says most prompts will go to Flash-Lite, while prompts that need deeper reasoning may go to Flash or Pro. It does not say how that decision is made or how often it happens.
  • Turning smart selection off means Flash-Lite for everything. The old menu does not come back.
  • Effort levels arrive. Every available model now has low, medium and high effort. Higher effort gives more thorough answers but uses more of your limit.

The first reports, around 5 October, described free accounts being cut to Flash-Lite only. Google's current wording is a little softer: Flash-Lite is the main model, but Auto can escalate some tasks to stronger ones. What free users lose for sure is the ability to choose.

What stays the same on the free tier

Usage limits still work the way they have since 17 May 2026: they are based on how much compute each request uses, refresh every five hours and have a weekly cap. According to Google's Gemini limits and features page, the free tier has a 32,000-token context window and keeps Deep Research, Canvas, Audio Overviews and image generation with Nano Banana 2. Video generation remains a paid feature. The change applies to the Gemini app on personal accounts. Work and school accounts are covered by a separate help page.

What do the paid Google AI plans include now?

Some subscribers are affected too. Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro, and Google will email each subscriber with their effective date. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models. As of 14 October:

Android Police also reports that AI Pro gains Deep Think, the extended reasoning mode that used to be Ultra-only.

Is paying for Gemini worth it, or should you stay free?

For quick questions, email summaries, translation or brainstorming, Flash-Lite is fine. It is Google's fastest model, and Auto should escalate some harder tasks anyway. The gap shows up with heavier work:

  • Long documents. A 32,000-token context is not enough for a long contract or several PDFs at once. AI Pro goes up to one million tokens.
  • Coding and complex analysis. This is where Pro matters, and free users cannot force it.
  • Heavy daily use. If you hit the weekly cap, AI Plus doubles your allowance and AI Pro quadruples it.

If you only use Gemini now and then, there is no need to pay. If it is part of your daily work, AI Pro is the plan that keeps full access. AI Plus is now missing the Pro model.

The best free Gemini alternatives

If you want strong models without paying, these are the most solid options in October 2026. For a broader comparison, see our Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini guide.

1. Google AI Studio: Gemini models, free, with full control

This is the most direct alternative, and the least known. According to the Gemini API pricing page, Google AI Studio is free of charge in every region where it is available, and the free tier includes models such as Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 2.5 Pro. Here you choose the model yourself. There are two catches: it is built for developers, and Google notes that free-tier content may be used to improve its products. Keep sensitive data out of it.

2. ChatGPT free

Since August 2026, OpenAI has offered unlimited text chats on its free plan, using a Luna-class model and a Think button for harder questions, TechCrunch reported. Files, images and voice still have separate limits.

3. Claude free

Anthropic's free plan includes the Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation, Artifacts and up to five projects, with usage limits. It is especially good for writing and working through documents. See our tips for using Claude for free.

4. Mistral's Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

The European option. Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026 and extended it with agent modes for work and coding. It still runs at chat.mistral.ai and has a free plan with limited messages and web searches.

5. Open models on your own machine

If privacy matters or you want to avoid quotas altogether, you can run open models locally. You need a reasonably powerful computer, but no vendor can change the rules on you. We cover the options in open-source alternatives you can self-host.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini still free?

Yes. The Gemini app is still free with a personal Google account, but since 9 October 2026 you cannot choose the model: Auto mode mostly uses Gemini Flash-Lite.

Can I use Gemini Pro for free?

Not directly in the app. Auto may send some complex prompts to Pro, but you cannot select it. Choosing Pro requires AI Pro or AI Ultra, though you can try Gemini 2.5 Pro free in Google AI Studio.

What happens if I pay for Google AI Plus?

You keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro. Google will email each subscriber with the date the change applies to them.

What is the best free alternative to Gemini?

It depends on your use: Google AI Studio if you want Gemini models and the freedom to choose, ChatGPT for heavy chatting, and Claude for writing and document work.
